Through the tears in our eyes and with a hole in our hearts, we announce that Alexander James Lenzi went home to be with the Lord on May 9, 2025. Alex was a beloved Son, Brother, Uncle, Cousin and dear friend to so many. The world lost a visionary artist, cinematographer, director, photographer, editor and profound storyteller, with a compassionate eye and deep sense of humanity.
Alex, along with his twin sister Alison, were born in Frederick, Maryland on July 2, 1987, to their loving parents, Michael and Cindy Lenzi. Alex was raised in Frederick, Maryland, where he attended Frederick High School, Class of 2005. He was an accomplished percussionist, and member of Frederick High School Marching Band. It was during his early childhood when Alex developed a love and passion for film.
He pursued his love of film in his higher education, first attending Bowling Green State University, and then at Towson University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Electronic Media & Film. After graduating from Towson in 2011 he moved to Seattle, Washington to begin a career in film. Over the course of more than a decade in the film industry, Alex worked on short films and documentaries.
Although his work took him to many places, he was captivated by his time in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where he filmed “Life of Flowers,” a 2016 film, under the direction of Jimmy Bontatibus. The work was officially selected in the Local Sightings Film Festival 2016, Sarajevo Film Festival in 2017, as well as the Prague International Film Festival in 2017.
Alex took great pride in his work as a film maker and was proud of his work on the film “Tides of Hyperion,” where he was credited as the writer and director. The film was shown in the Local Sightings Film Festival. It was later awarded the Audience Choice Award for Best Short Film at the North West Film Forum in 2020.
Alex’s vision in cinema extended to photography as well. Recently, Alex was involved in the film “Suburban Fury” by Robinson Devor and is credited as a director of photography. Alex was most happy when he simply went out into the community to take photographs of the world around him. He had an eye of compassion and empathy and took pride in capturing beauty in turbulent times. He compiled a collection of photographs for an online photo book called “Ethernaut,” which largely centered on the experience of life during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Alex secured notoriety and excelled in his film career. The compelling work he did in a career that was all-too short was only surpassed by the love he had for his family and friends. Alex was a shoulder to cry on, a warm hug in the cold rain, with a dynamic sense of humor, and a laugh that could carry through a building. We will miss his smile that could illuminate a dark room, and the thunderous laugh that could evaporate the most persistent of tears.
Alex is predeceased by his sister Alison Lenzi, his paternal grandmother (“Gram”), Mary Lenzi, his maternal grandfather (“Poppy”), William Travers and maternal grandmother (“Nana”), Mary Jones.
Alex is survived by his father and mother, Michael Lenzi and Cindy Lenzi, his sister Rebecca Gillmore, his brothers Nicholas Lenzi, and Christopher Lenzi, sister-in-law, Leslie Lenzi, nephews Graham Lenzi, Miles Lenzi, and nieces Sophia Gillmore, Gracie Gillmore and Cordelia Lenzi, his paternal grandfather Joseph Lenzi, and too many adoring cousins and friends to name.
Alex enjoyed a broader perspective in both his life and his art, which led him to become an FAA Part 107 certified drone pilot, to capture breathtaking views from a higher place. We wish we could see the footage he is taking from his place above. Rest easy, Alex.
Memorial services will be held privately among family and friends at a time and place to be determined.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation or to the Humane Society Of The United States.
